Real Talk: Proteins
We all know of the three main macronutrients; carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. Proteins are to some believed to be the most important macronutrient, but some disagree. What are the actual benefits of this macro and why should I incorporate more into my daily diet? Let's look further into protein and why it's always good to consume.
Proteins are essential to human life. They are made up of chains of amino acids and are required for a variety of processes, including the growth and repair of tissues, the production of enzymes and hormones, and the immune system quality. When people consume proteins, they satiate many of their body’s needs, plus some. Below are some of my favorite benefits I’ve found from consuming adequate amounts of protein.
Muscle growth and repair
Satiation and weight management: proteins in nature are more filling, and help you avoid overconsumption
Skin health: aids in the production of collagen
Now that we know why we should consume proteins, how do we know how much to consume? As most things in life, it varies person to person, goal to goal. I always suggest people begin by taking note of how much they’re already consuming, and see how they’d feel after gradually increasing that amount. The most important aspect of any consumption is its quality, and the same goes for protein. High quality meats, nuts, nut butter, and protein powder all play an important role in the absorption of a person's protein intake. Unsure how to know what's high quality and what’s not? Try to go as close to the source as you can, and take a peak at any label's ingredients list. Good note: if you can’t pronounce it, odds are your body doesn’t want you to consume it.
