The Grain Truth

As we all know, each one of us is wildly unique. Each one of our bodies reacts to things differently. The best way to truly decipher what your body prefers is through trial and error. Once you are patient in trusting your own intuition, the rest falls into place. Recently I've been confronted with the conflict that grains bring into my life, so I thought it’d be helpful to share my findings to help those also questioning if grains should be a part of their regular routine or not. I’ve learned most of what I know about grains by the information given to me by my functional medicine doctor, Dr. Lori Puskar. Not only has she helped me learn the depth of my body but has also educated me even more on the role foods play within it, including grains.

Grains are made of starch surrounded by a kernel and decompose in the body as glucose. Glucose increases blood sugar and causes your pancreas to produce more insulin. Grains also don’t contain any vitamins or minerals, which are necessary for digestion to occur, so the body takes the vitamins and minerals stores from elsewhere to assist in digestion. With all this being said, if someone's intestines agree with grains amongst other ingredients containing nutrients, one can consider having it as a part of their regular diet. Now for those with sassy intestines such as myself, it’s definitely something to consider when contemplating your regular food regime. When your body takes too many nutrients from elsewhere it can cause symptoms that correlate with those of various chronic conditions. Recently I've eliminated grains from my diet, and am anxious to see how it can help improve my gut health and autoimmunity. I’ll continue to share my findings and hope it can inspire you to take action and be patient with leveling up your body from the inside out.
