Real Talk: Supplements
Unsure if your current diet is getting you an adequate amount of nutrients? We can’t all be perfect, after all. It’s unrealistic to expect the modern way of living to promote that kind of perfection. Because of this, the pharmaceutical world created supplements to help offset what's lacking in the modern diet. A theory that seems harmless and almost bulletproof in helping people reach adequate health, but a lot more goes into it than we’d think. Let’s take a closer look at the topic of supplements and how you can best intertwine them within your health practices.
The goal is to give your body what it needs, then it will make everything else it needs from that. As in everything in life, quality is key. With a continuously growing market of supplements and vitamins, it’s hard to know what to trust. The most important tidbit to take away is that true efficient supplements must come in whole food form for the body to properly absorb them. Science doesn't come close to duplicating nature. Synthetic vitamins don’t mimic the nutrient, rather cause confusion and distress to the body. Synthetic vitamins don’t have the effects of natural vitamins simply because they are missing many parts of the whole complex.
When searching through the pharmacy aisle, be cognizant of those that distinguish “whole food form”. I typically get my supplements from a whole, organic grocery or farmers market, or directly from a functional doctor, helping ensure the selection is more narrow. Which supplements to take depends on which symptoms you're feeling and wanting relief from.
